BurnSim for macOS
=================

It ships in two versions - the folder you unzipped says which one you have:

  * ...-macos-arm64 Apple Silicon Macs (M1 or later, 2020 onward)
  * ...-macos-x64    Intel Macs

If you are on Apple Silicon, prefer the arm64 package - it runs natively.
The Intel package will also run there via Rosetta 2, but there is no
reason to choose it.

The download is a real BurnSim.app bundle - drag it to Applications (or
run it in place) and double-click like any other Mac app.

First launch: one extra step
----------------------------
BurnSim is signed, but not with a paid Apple Developer ID, and it is not
notarized by Apple. So the first time you open it, macOS will refuse and
say it "cannot be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious
software". This is expected and it is a one-time step:

  1. Unzip the download and double-click BurnSim.app. macOS will refuse
to open it. That first refused launch is required.
  2. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security, scroll down to the
Security section, and click "Open Anyway" next to BurnSim.
  3. Double-click BurnSim.app again and confirm. It will launch
     normally from then on.

On macOS 15 (Sequoia) and later the old right-click > Open trick no
longer works for apps like this - "Open Anyway" is the replacement.

If you would rather do it in one Terminal command, this is equivalent:

    xattr -cr BurnSim.app

(Open Terminal, type `xattr -cr ` with a trailing space, drag
BurnSim.app from Finder onto the Terminal window to fill in the path,
and press Return.)

If you see something different
------------------------------
"BurnSim is damaged and can't be opened. You should move it to the
Trash." - Do NOT move it to the Trash; nothing is wrong with your
download. This affected versions 4.0.0.15 through 4.0.0.21, whose app
bundle carried a malformed signature. Either run `xattr -cr BurnSim.app`
as above, or download a newer build, where it is fixed.

"The application cannot be opened" (a bare message, with no mention of
a developer or of Apple checking it) - the app's executable permission
did not survive unzipping; some third-party unzip tools drop it. Restore
it with:

    chmod +x BurnSim.app/Contents/MacOS/BurnSim

Where your files live
---------------------
Settings, activity logs, the propellant database, and license data are
stored under:

    ~/Library/Application Support/BurnSim/

Reporting problems
------------------
Activity logging is on by default (Settings > Log Activity for Bug
Reports). If something goes wrong, please send the newest file from

    ~/Library/Application Support/BurnSim/logs/

along with what you were doing, to burnsim@burnsim.com.
